Workshop 2

The second workshop within the framework of Endure, entitled “Research in structural engineering and construction: a meeting between Universitat Politècnica de València and Universitat de les Illes Balears”, took place on June 22 and 23 at the UPV and ICITECH. This workshop was organized as a part of WP3 of Endure, where we performed the partial collapse test of a precast reinforced concrete (RC) building to evaluate the potential benefit of “natural” segmentation.

We welcomed Prof Antonio Marí (Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya), Prof Antoni Cladera, Dr Joaquín Guillermo Ruiz Pinilla, and Dr Carlos Ribas (Universitat de les Illes Balears), who are university professors and experts in the structural engineering field. In addition, we also had the opportunity to learn from several ongoing research projects performed by the PhD students from UIB, including the following topics: analysis of embedded energy and CO2 emitted in the process of renovation of existing buildings, deterioration of RC members due to corrosion, development of a web application for the analysis of shear resistance of RC members, the application of shape memory alloy for slabs, and the behavior of SMA subjected to cyclic loading.

These were the scheduled events:

June 22. We organized a technical seminar to exchange knowledge between our research group (Building Resilient) at ICITECH, UPV and Universitat de les Illes Balears. The seminar was then followed by a laboratory visit where we showed them several ongoing experimental projects performed at ICITECH.

June 23. We invited our guests to visit Alberic, an outdoor site where we performed large-scale testing. On this day, our team successfully completed the partial collapse test of the precast RC building to prove the benefits of segmentation in improving structural robustness.
