Attendance to international conferences in 2024

The Building Resilient team was present at many international conferences this year, especially during the summer season. Below is a recap of our attendance at conferences in 2024.

Nirvan Makoond and Diego Cetina attended the Euro-American Congress on Construction Pathology, Rehabilitation Technology and Heritage Management – REHABEND 2024, held in Gijon (Spain), 07th -10th May 2024 (https://www.rehabend.unican.es/). They contributed to the congress with two presentations related to the results of the Endure project and the computational models we use to evaluate failure propagation in buildings.

At the end of May, Jose M. Adam travelled to Brazil to attend the XX International Conference on Building Pathology and Constructions Repair – CINPAR 2024 (https://sites.google.com/view/cinpar/cinpar-2024), with a keynote lecture entitled “Full-scale experimental testing to achieve robust structures”.

Jose M. Adam contributed to the 19th Structural Faults & Repair Conference-2024 (https://www.structuralfaultsandrepair.com/), held in Edinburgh (Scotland) between the 11th and 13th June 2024, with a keynote lecture about isolating failure to avoid building catastrophic collapses.

Jose M. Adam and Manuel Buitrago participated in the Joint 3D GeoInfo Conference and EG-ICE workshop 2024 held in Vigo (Spain), 1st – 5th July 2024 (https://3dgeoinfoeg-ice.webs.uvigo.es/). They participated in the conference with a presentation showing the main results of the Entire project and a keynote speech on the achievements of the Endure project, both focused this time on advanced computational modelling.

Jose M. Adam also travelled to Athens (Greece) to attend the ICEFA X – Tenth International Conference on Engineering Failure Analysis (https://www.elsevier.com/events/conferences/all/international-conference-on-engineering-failure-analysis), held between the 7th and 10th July 2024, with a keynote speech entitled “Avoiding catastrophic collapses of buildings and bridges”.

Andri Setiawan contributed to the HAKI (Himpunan Ahli Konstruksi Indonesia) annual conference, held in Jakarta (Indonesia), 20th – 21st August 2024. He was one of the invited speakers and he presented the overview and recent progress of the Endure project. He also gave another presentation on the partial collapse test of a precast building specimen.

Maria Luz Gerbaudo and Giacomo Caredda attended the 15th fib PhD Symposium 2024, held in Budapest (Hungary), 28th – 30th August 2024 (https://www.fib-international.org/events/fib-events/155-15th-fib-international-phd-symposium-in-civil-engineering-in-budapest-hungary.html). They participated in the conference with two presentations related to the Endure project, entitled “Structural fuse-based segmentation for limiting disproportionate building collapse: design requirements” and “A risk-based framework for enhancing the robustness of framed building structures through segmentation”.

Lorenzo Marin attended the fib International Conference on Concrete Sustainability – ICCS 2024, held in Guimarães (Portugal), 11th – 13th September 2024 (https://www.fib-international.org/events/fib-events/122-iccs2024.html). He presented the work carried out in the Endure project and the PhD team won the fib Young Members Group (YMG) Competition 2024 for their entry “Fuse-based segmentation: a novel design approach to improve structural robustness of concrete building structures”.

Manuel Buitrago and Juan Camilo Reyes contributed to the DinEst 2024 Conference on Structural Dynamics, held in Seville (Spain), 12th – 13th September 2024 (https://congreso.us.es/dinest2024/index.html). Manuel Buitrago gave a talk about the Enroot project entitled “Robust timber-to-timber connections for buildings to avoid disproportionate collapse”. Juan Camilo gave a talk related to the Pont3 project entitled “Dynamic evaluation of a scaled-down bridge subjected to sudden member losses”.

Finally, Jose M. Adam and Nirvan Makoond attended the 1st International Conference on Engineering Structures – ICES 2024, held in Guangzhou (China), 8th – 11th November 2024 (https://www.ices2024.cn/). Nirvan Makoond gave a presentation on the effectiveness of fuse-based segmentation for enhancing the structural robustness of buildings. Jose M. Adam gave a Keynote Lecture on the last line of defence against catastrophic building collapses, and also took part in a Face to Face session with Editors.
