Over the next two years, Building Resilient will collaborate with the companies CALSENS and COTA A COTA in the SENSAT project, which has been funded by the Valencian Innovation Agency (Agència Valenciana de la Innovació – AVI) in the call for projects for the consolidation of the business value chain.
The project will develop a new intelligent system for evaluating the structural health of bridges and viaducts. The new system, based on the shape sensing of structures, will be accompanied by a platform for efficiently managing the information collected in real time. This will allow more effective decisions to be taken on predictive maintenance and risk mitigation measures.
Our work focuses on the development of data processing software to monitor the evolution of the deformed shape of the structure. This will provide a diagnosis of the state of the infrastructure in real time, considering the possible risks of failure. We will also work in experimental campaigns under laboratory and real conditions to test the prototype and validate the proposed solution.
The first tests to validate the new monitoring system will be carried out on scaled structural elements, simulating a reinforced concrete box girder bridge and a metal truss bridge. Finally, the system will be validated by its implementation in a real viaduct, specifically in the new viaduct over the Quisi ravine in Benissa (Alicante).
The SENSAT project, which has a total budget of €655,000, has been funded by the Valencian Innovation Agency (AVI) with €393,000 and will last for 2 years.
We hope that our contribution to the project will help to create new tools for the predictive maintenance of bridges and to anticipate the propagation of structural failures.
